Maths4Life (Completed)
What the project entails:

Maths4Life was a project which aimed to stimulate a positive approach to teaching and learning in numeracy and maths.  The three year project was funded by the Skills for Life Strategy Unit at the DfES.

Maths4Life combined research and practice to produce a number of resources that provide guidance for all those involved in the delivery of numeracy and non-specialist maths.

The project was developed by a consortium of partners led by the NRDC with the LLU+ at London South Bank University as its main partner.

Other consortium members included:

  • Kings College,
  • University of London,
  • University of Nottingham,
  • LSDA,
  • NIACE,
  • CTAD.
Aims:
The overall aim of the Maths4Life was to advance adult / post-16 numeracy and non-specialist maths teaching and learning from its present under-developed state through an integrated programme of research and development. To achieve this Maths4Life attempted to:
  • Build on existing research to develop provision in a coherent way, effectively linked to specialist maths
  • Improve quality of teaching and learning
  • Build capacity and engage new learners
  • Popularise maths – stimulate demand and sustain engagement
  • Communicate, consult and collaborate with key stakeholders
  • Ensure numeracy and maths are tackled as whole organisation priority
  • Connect numeracy and non-specialist maths with specialist maths provision and qualifications, focusing on learners’ qualification aims and programmes post-16

Progress update:

A database of numeracy research references has been produced, which is available at http://www.nrdc.org.uk/anr.asp.

The Maths4Life project came to an end in 2007.

The resources produced as part of the project have been migrated to the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) web portal.

The NCETM portal also provides a great number of useful resources to support teachers in their professional development and collaborative teaching and learning in mathematics.  The NCETM portal contains:  News, Events, Research, Resources, Communities, Blogs, the Mathemapedia, and a range of self-evaluation tools.
