British Ballet Organization joins LONCETT

Date posted: 19 June 2012

LONCETT is pleased to welcome the British Ballet Organisation as a LONCETT partner in recognition of its commitment to the quality of teacher training and development of recognised qualifications for the dance profession.

The British Ballet Organization is an International, approved examination body for dancers and teachers.  It has been supporting the training of dancers and dance teachers for over 80 years.  The BBO offers a progressive examination structure from Pre-Syllabus through to professional standard, which acknowledges the success of recreational dance students and prepare those students who consider dance as a prospective career.  It not only offers ballet training but also other most popular, established dance genres/techniques.  Additionally, many courses and CPD opportunities are available through weekend and holiday courses.

Since 2007, BBO began to offer a range of dance teaching qualifications that require a progressive development of knowledge of the theory and principles of pedagogy, as well as the subject knowledge of candidate's dance genre.

Currently the wide range of dance techniques/genres offered is being extended and street jazz, ballroom and social dance will be added to the portfolio of dance styles offered.  Recently BBO approved the Len Goodman Studios in Dartford as one of their authorized teaching centres.

Courses offered in 2012/13 include

For dancers - Ballet, contemporary, GCSE dance hip hop, jazz, musical theatre, repertoire, pointe, singing and tap.

For teachers/student teachers they offer -

Level 3  Introductory Diploma in Dance Teaching, an access course giving qualified status as a Dance Teaching Assistant.
Level 4 Diploma in Dance Teaching, building on prior knowledge and includes Initial Teacher Training qualifications and approved teacher status
Level 5/6 Diploma in Dance Teaching which covers DTLLS allowing QTLS through professional formation.  Level 6 on the QCF is degree equivalent.
GCSE Dance Short study courses for those who wish to deliver GCSE dance in schools and colleges.

The teaching courses meet the needs and diverse backgrounds of dancers of various dance techniques/genres, ranging from 18 year olds to professional dancers and experienced teachers seeking government recognised teaching
qualifications.

All courses are part-time, combining distance learning with taught sessions in London or at BBO authorised teaching centres.  Individual units within each course can be taken separately and accredited towards the relevant Diploma, or as Continued Professional Development.

For BBO membership there are many events both social and for CPD.  The BBC welcomes teachers of other professions who may have an interest in a specific dance subject to join us.

The British Ballet Academy (BBA) was launched in September, 2011, at the BBO Headquarters to give day students aged 14 - 16 years the opportunity to study ballet intensively, while still maintaining a full GCSE academic programme.  Students have three hours of dance related activity each morning and receive their academic teaching in the afternoon, through our partnership with Ealing, West London and Hammersmith College.

Teaching Diploma candidates frequently observe and analyse the classwork of the BBA students, to their mutual benefit.

Youngsters, who have an aptitude and a commitment to study dance are selected as BBO Scholars, to attend BBO Centres throughout UK, where they are given specialist classes and courses, which complement their regular dance classes.

Should you be interested in classes for your students, yourself or to find a BBO approved teacher near you, please contact the BBO at:
