NRDC presented this evaluation report, written in May 2005 but  published  in the spring of 2007, in response to continuing interest in – and importance of – its subject matter. The publication of Prosperity for all in the global economy – world class skills by Lord Leitch in December 2006 drew fresh attention to the need for employment-based literacy and numeracy development.

This report is the second in a series focused on the implementation of different approaches to literacy and numeracy within vocational apprenticeships. A third NRDC study, again revisiting these apprenticeship programmes, explored literacy and numeracy development within the workplace context, to complement this earlier work on the taught or ‘day-release’ part of these programmes.

This series of studies exploring literacy and numeracy in apprenticeships complements other NRDC publications on embedded literacy and numeracy and on working with young learners.
